The speed of flowing water, memories of ascent rather than descent.

We tried to come across an ascending movement through a waterfall’s image.
The paradox is of finding an ascending movement in a descending image derived from our memory of unknown, forgotten time such as the Jeju April 3 incident. On this account, its English title has become Ascension. The Jeongbang Waterfall is a place of painful memories. Regardless of this, however, water there continues to flow down to the sea and time buries every memory.

물이 흐르는 속도, 하강이 아닌 상승의 기억

우리는 폭포의 이미지에서 오히려 상승의 움직임을 만나려고 했다.
하강의 이미지에서 사려져 버리는 증기, 상승의 움직임을 찾아낸 역설은 제주의 4·3이라는 혹은 그 이전의 우리가 알 수도 없는, 잊힌 시간에 대한 기억 때문이었다.
그런 이유로 영어 제목은 Ascension이 되었다. 정방폭포는 아픈 기억의 공간이다. 하지만 그것과 상관없이 물은 거기에 계속 있었고, 바다로 흘러간다. 그리고 사라지듯이 모든 시간의 기억이 그 속에 입을 다물고 묻히는 것이다.
